Marsh Infant and Nursery School

History

At Marsh School, it is our intent that all children will have opportunities to learn about the history of Britain and the wider world. Children will be encouraged to gain knowledge and understanding of chronology and develop a curiosity to know more about the past. Children will be given every opportunity to understand the similarities and differences of lives of people in the past and present and the process of change. Common words and phrases relating to the passing of time are taught in a meaningful context. We aim to foster an interest in the past, and to develop an understanding that enables our children to enjoy all that historical learning has to offer. We will explore significant events in British history, and learn about how some things have changed over time. Children will develop a sense of chronology, starting within the context of their own family and life experiences. There is a focus on helping children to understand that historical events can be interpreted in different ways, and they are taught how to ask searching questions, such as ‘how do we know?’, about information they are given. Cross-curricular links are made wherever appropriate. History lessons will help children to develop the skills of enquiry, investigation, analysis, evaluation and presentation.
